What is the church of Jesus?

WE ARE FAMILY

The church of Jesus is a term that is used TWO different ways:

First and foremost, the church of Jesus is the entire body of Christ, globally and over all time. It even includes the children of God who have died and are now living in heaven! In other words, the "church of Jesus" is every single person who has ever been born-again. To be born-again as Jesus discussed in John chapter three, is to be given the grace by God to completely surrender one's life to the Lord, trusting in the blood of Jesus to cover all your sins and bring you God's forgiveness, eternal life, and re-creation into a beloved child of the living God. This is the most wonder-filled and amazing thing that can happen to a human being. It starts the process. It is day one of the new life that is actually the life we are all called to live.

The church of Jesus means the people who are followers of Jesus and "church" is a translation from "ecclesia" in Greek. It means the people who are "called out" of this perishing temporary world, and called into a new life in Jesus. The "ecclesia" or "called out ones" are those who are collectively... God's family! We are the body of truly born-again believers, who through no credit to ourselves, have been given the grace of God to be reborn into God the Father's children. We are family.

Secondly, "the church of Jesus" is intentionally not capitalized. This is because we are not an organization. It is not a title. It is actually our true identity. We are not confined to a church building. We are not confined to a specific location or time period, as discussed above. However, we do experience our primary fellowship as close-knit family members in the context of homes. When we walk into a home to participate in a house church worship time, we are operating as family. Even more specifically we are operating as a local family physically interacting with one another, face to face. Spiritually speaking, we are operating as a nuclear family, much like a father, mother, and their children in a household would be. This nuclear family is the key launching pad from which all our activities, spiritual life as a community, and our connection and support take place. It does not exclude any individual people or "churches" who choose to meet in larger buildings and refer to themselves as the "First Church of X" or whatever name they might use. We are all brothers and sisters for now and all eternity if we are truly born-again believers in Jesus. We are all, collectively without excluding anyone, the body of Christ.

Personal Note from Pastor Bobby:

In the end, I am simply a follower of Jesus, the King and Savior. I am a Christian, without sectarian restrictions or confusions. Therefore when I asked if I am Protestant, my answer is no. Am I Catholic? No. Am I  Orthodox? Again, no. However, on the other hand I am all three of these. I was baptized Roman Catholic as a baby and love their prayer rhythms, social outreach leadership and many other things about these brothers and sisters. I was raised in Protestant church primarily and love their emphasis on the Bible as the reliable word of God and guide for all of life. I believe in the Orthodox creeds and can fellowship with these brothers and sisters also. Their Bible includes all the books of the canon that Jesus and his apostles and the early church fathers used, unlike the Protestant or Catholic Bibles. They are defenders and promoters of the orthodox faith which I highly respect. So, I am happy to fellowship and call Orthodox, Catholic, or Protestants my brothers and sisters. It is not their title or affiliation that matters. It is their essence. Are they re-created as children of God? Or do they simply follow a religion. If they are re-created, then we are family! In the end, I am simply a follower of Jesus. I am a Christian, without sectarian restrictions or confusions. I follow Jesus with all my heart, since the Holy Spirit has filled me with himself and given me a heart to do this. I can take no credit, at all, for the good work within my heart that the Holy Spirit has done. So, with his power and help, I seek to follow Jesus faithfully in community with ALL others "who call on the name of the Lord." (Acts 2:21; Romans 10:13). Calling on the Lord is not only an individual act (such as when we are re-created in our moment of salvation). It is also very community oriented. (2 Timothy 2:22; 1 Corinthians 1:12). We are family and need to operate as such. as healthy nuclear local families and also loving our global brothers and sisters, no matter where they are, or what they call themselves. We seek to walk in unity with all believers who follow Jesus.

WE ARE A
HEALING COMMUNITY

From minor situations to very severe ones, all of us have been hurt in our lives. The church of Jesus is a family and therefore a place to find loving brothers and sisters in Christ who are walking the healing journey together with you. Don't do it alone.

Whether our brokenness is emotional, physical, sexual, relational, or any other type, we all need friends, family, loved ones who are willing to walk the journey of healing with us. Jesus is our Healer. And He uses His body (i.e. followers of Jesus) to assist in that healing process that He initiates and brings to completion.

WE SHARE LIFE,
ONE-ON-ONE

Whether in one-on-one mentoring relationships, or in one-on-one peer relationships, we are committed to building one another through "life-on-life" relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ. While many good things can happen in a large church community and building, we are committed to focusing on the things that happen in small groups and in one-on-one relationships, living as brothers and sisters... in close community and mutually supporting one another as we travel on this journey we call "life"... together.

WE ARE AUTHENTIC

We value being "real" with one another. No pretense, no fakeness. Just being us, real and true. We are very far from perfect, but we are family, seeking to love each other, to live in community with each other by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us. He gives us the strength day by day to walk out our faith, individually and communally.

It's been said, "God loves you just as you are! But way too much to leave you that way." He makes His children more like Jesus, more full of His love and His ways, more holy and true. He causes us to grow in walking in the light, walking in His love, day by day. And we are on this journey, together. Deception (of self or others) has no place as we continue to grow in His truth. Authenticity and honesty, even in our failures, is a mark of family member's in the church of Jesus.
